My Experience at the Mortgage Bankers Association Conference in San Diego

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Mortgage Bankers Association Conference in San Diego as a student scholar, and it was truly one of the most impactful professional experiences I’ve had.

Walking into the conference, I expected strong programming and meaningful networking. What I did not expect was just how welcoming, generous, and collaborative the entire community would feel.

A Cohort That Inspires

One of the highlights of the week was connecting with an incredible cohort of student scholars from across the country. Each person brought a different background, perspective, and set of aspirations, but we were united by a shared interest in real estate finance and capital markets.

Spending time with peers who are equally passionate about the future of this industry reminded me why I was drawn to it in the first place. The conversations went far beyond resumes and job titles. We talked about long-term impact, innovation in lending, and how we can each contribute to shaping a more resilient and inclusive housing finance system.

There is something powerful about being surrounded by ambitious people who genuinely want to see each other win.

Learning from Industry Leaders

The speaker lineup was exceptional. Hearing from Admiral William H. McRaven was particularly memorable. His reflections on leadership, discipline, and resilience resonated deeply. The principles he shared extended far beyond military service. They applied directly to business, personal growth, and the responsibility that comes with leading others.

Beyond that keynote, the conference was filled with panels and discussions featuring leaders across lending, servicing, capital markets, and policy. The transparency with which executives discussed both challenges and opportunities in today’s market environment was refreshing. It reinforced that this is an industry constantly adapting, innovating, and evolving.

A Network That Feels Like Community

What stood out most to me was the culture of the industry itself. At every networking reception, panel session, and informal conversation, professionals were willing to share advice, offer introductions, and invest time in students. There was no sense of gatekeeping. Instead, there was an openness and genuine interest in mentoring the next generation.

As someone who cares deeply about relationship-driven industries, this meant a lot.

I left San Diego with far more than a stack of business cards. I left with new mentors, new friendships, and a clearer understanding of how interconnected this field truly is.

Grateful to Be a Small Part of Something Big

The mortgage and real estate finance industry is evolving rapidly. Markets shift. Capital flows adjust. Policy landscapes change. Yet through it all, the people remain committed, thoughtful, and forward-looking.

I am incredibly grateful to play even a small role in such a dynamic and growing industry, one filled with individuals who are not only sharp and driven, but also welcoming and willing to offer a hand.

Experiences like this remind me that careers are not built alone. They are built in community.

Thank you to the Mortgage Bankers Association and everyone who made this opportunity possible. I am leaving San Diego energized, inspired, and more committed than ever to contributing meaningfully to this space.
